A new study suggests that women may be significantly more likely to suffer from breast cancer if they are missing teeth and have gum disease.

The study carried out in the Karolinska Institute in Sweden on over 3,000 patients concentrated on the 41 people who developed breast cancer.  It found that those who had gum disease and had lost teeth were 11 times more likely to go on to develop cancer.

As this appears to be the first study presenting such findings, the British Dental Health Foundation believes more needs to be done in order to confirm the results.

Gum disease – Evidence to link oral health with wider health issues.

There is a growing body of evidence to link oral health (gum disease) with wider health issues.  If a person has gum disease, it is thought that bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and affect the heart, causing a higher risk of heart disease. The same principles affect those with diabetes, as people with the condition are more likely to pick up infections.

People with gum disease are also thought to be at greater risk of strokes – chest infections, and pregnant women with gum disease are seven times more likely to have a premature baby with low birth weight.

Periodontal disease is one of the most common causes of tooth loss. Once your smile diminishes your confidence and self-esteem are affected. The success or failure of dental implant surgery is dependant on good strong healthy teeth, gums and jaw bone. To be a good candidate for dental implants you need to be highly motivated to improve and maintain healthy teeth and gums to support the dental implant.

Implants are considered the “gold standard” for replacement of missing teeth as they are fixed in place and don’t require any preparation of adjacent teeth. They usually involve having a titanium implant placed into the gum with a crown placed on top. Implants can also be used as “anchors” to stabilize dentures and prevent them moving around where this option for tooth replacement is appropriate.

Tooth loss, oral infections and severe gum disease can occur as a result of poor oral hygiene.  There is usually one main cause, a build up of plaque around the gums and teeth.  If left untreated, dental plaque can accumulate and may harden in to tartar or calculus. Hygienists work to promote better awareness of brushing technique, the importance of flossing and the need for greater oral hygiene. Visiting the hygienist regularly can allow us to monitor the condition of your gums and help you keep your teeth for longer.

We are aware that for some a visit to the dentist can cause dread and anxiety, yet good dental and oral hygiene advice can help you reduce these anxious visits.

Your hygienist is trained to demonstrate how to clean your teeth properly. The hygienist will give you advice on tooth brushing and show you how to get between the teeth effectively, therefore, improving your oral hygiene and maintain healthy gums and mouth.  Keeping plaque and tartar to a minimum will reduce any bleeding from the gums.  Bleeding is a warning sign of future problems and should  not be overlooked.

The majority of adult patients need to have a plaque control appointment every 6 months; although some patients require an appointment more regularly than that. Your dentist will advise you.

Registering as a New Patient:

All our new patients require a comprehensive Oral Health Screening, x-rays, confidential medical questionnaire and possibly photographs to analyse the structure of the patients face and smile.  Dental charting along with a detailed gum examination and oral cancer screening are also carried out.  This appointment is designed to gain as much information as possible and to establish what the patient would like to achieve.  Patients are encouraged to bring a list of questions and concerns regarding their particular expectations.  Both dentist and patient will decide together  on the most appropriate treatment to achieve a healthy and  natural smile.

Initial Consultation

You can expect your first visit to the practice to take approximately 30 minutes. The fee will be £73.00 inclusive of x-rays.  At the end of the consultation appointment you will know what treatment is required to achieve optimum dental health and what cosmetic procedures,  if any, are recommended.  An appointment will be arranged to start treatment if you decide to proceed with the agreed treatment plan.

We do not always need to see you on a six monthly basis. Once your dental  hygiene routine is stable your reminders will be tailored and set at intervals suitable to your dental health and treatment needs.

Appointments are booked between Monday  8.30am and 18.30pm, Tuesday – Thursday 08.30am and 17.30pm & Fridays 8.30am –16.30.  Saturdays appointments are available.

For new patients, we  require a deposit for the initial consultation  to reserve the appointment. We always ask patients, unless otherwise agreed, to pay for their dental treatment at the end of each visit.  Charges may be made for any missed appointments or appointment cancelled without 24 hours notice.  For dental appointments over 1 hour as a courtesy we ask for 48 hours notice of cancellation.

Cancelled & Missed Appointments

Missed and cancelled appointments  cost the practice a significant amount. We believe the fairest solution is to charge this lost revenue directly to the patients who cancel and miss appointments rather than pass it on to all patients in the form of price increases. Tayside Dental Plan & Denplan members included.

There will always be a genuine emergency and in this instance there will be no charge.
